Global Warming?

By Peter Mills MA PhD

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

(H.L. Mencken (1880-1956, American Journalist)

For many years now, we have suffered remorselessly under the dictates of politicians who have attempted to forcibly indoctrinate us that the world is growing ever hotter as a result of human industry and that we must all make big sacrifices to stop this happening, or at least slow it down.

For example, a worldwide concurrence (or conspiracy?) of governments have legislated to ban the general public from using proper incandescent light bulbs “…because these contribute to carbon emissions which increase the rate of global warming…” As a result of this, it is effectively illegal to manufacture, import or sell incandescent light bulbs. Another result, of course, is the deterioration of eyesight as we all attempt to read and live in the more feeble illumination of fluorescent bulbs which are the only general alternative.

The first countries to phase-out the manufacture, sale and general use of incandescent light bulbs were Venezuela and Brazil in 2005.  The European Union (which unfortunately includes the “United” Kingdom) together with Australia and Switzerland began the phase-out in 2009. The Russian Federation and Argentina began the phase-out policy in 2012. In the opening month of 2014, the United States, Mexico, Canada, Malaysia and South Korea have followed suit (1).

Then there is the “Windfarm Debacle” – a new type of business which is so preposterous, unsightly, unnecessary and riddled with political correctness that it has been controversial (and demonstrably useless) since it first began. Put simply, rich people and governments have invested money in it, and so it must not be allowed to collapse even though it doesn’t work properly, doesn’t improve the world’s climate, adds hideousness to the landscape, keeps nearby people awake at nights and poses a deadly danger to human life and limb (2).

To quote a quote from the website “Turbines on Fire” (reference 2) by science writer Eric Rosenbloom:- “…the Wind Industry and Wind Developers… enrich a few landowners, pay for a school or fire truck, persuade some of the locals with their good intentions, pit the rest of the people against each other, then they take what they want.”

However, to the intense annoyance of our politicians and business moguls, the Sun itself does not share their fatuous opinions about global warming! The Sun has given them the cold-shoulder!!

Scientifically, the Sun has a natural 11 year maximum-minimum activity cycle. Right now, it is at what is termed “solar maximum”. This part of the Sun’s natural rhythmical cycle has always been associated with a big increase in “energy storms” on the Sun (known as “sunspots”), gigantic solar flares and huge spurts of charged particles called coronal mass ejections which reach the earth and beyond.

However, it’s just not happening. Right now, when it should be at its maximum level of energetic activity, the Sun is strangely quiet. In fact, the previous “solar minimum” some 11 years ago was also lower than normal in terms of solar activity (3)(4).

Richard Harrison, Head of Space Physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxford, has been widely quoted, saying: “… I’ve never seen anything quite like this… if you want to go back to see when the Sun was this inactive… you’ve got to go back about 100 years.” In fact, the Sun’s cycle of activity is possibly falling more rapidly today than at any time in the past 10,000 years. Professor Mike Lockwood of the University of Reading has said: “…It’s an unusually rapid decline.” Dr. Lucie Green of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University College London has commented: “… It’s completely taken me and many other solar scientists by surprise.”

Examination of ice-cores, which show the year-by-year level of the Sun’s activity, indicate that the reduction in solar activity is happening more rapidly than at any time since about the end of the last Ice Age. However, far more recently, there are records showing that the Sun has cooled-off severely for a period. Between 1645 and 1715 the Sun also entered a less-active period. This has been named the Maunder Minimum (after astronomers Annie and Walter Maunder). During the Maunder Minimum, “frost fairs” were held on the River Thames, at which a famous incident occurred when a blazing fire sufficiently big and hot to roast a whole ox did not manage to melt the ice. In fact, the Maunder Minimum has also been referred to as “the Little Ice-Age”.

During the Maunder Minimum, villages and farms in the Alps were destroyed by expanding glaciers. The Bospherous or Istanbul Strait froze over. A Swedish army was able to march across the frozen sea and invaded Denmark. The French invaded Holland by marching across frozen rivers. As late as 1780, people could walk on the frozen New York Harbour from Manhattan to Staten Island. Iceland suffered famine and the population fell by half. Norse colonies in Greenland had vanished by the early 1600s. Lisbon had regular heavy snowfalls. The Little Ice Age was even responsible for the uniquely beautiful tone of the violins made by the famous Antonio Stradivari, because the growth-rings of trees (and thus the grain of wood) were more compact than they have been since.

Dr. Lucie Green, mentioned earlier, has commented: “We estimate that within about 40 years or so there is… nearer a 20% probability that we’ll be back in Maunder Minumum conditions.”

In this same context, it is fact that we have just experienced one of the coldest winters in recent history, when the Niagara Falls froze and in some areas of the USA temperatures were recorded that were colder than the temperature at the South Pole in winter, and colder even than the surface of the planet Mars.

And what are our mainstream politicians doing about it? Why, naturally, they have been legislating to cut carbon emissions and lower the global temperature! Global Warming? It is much more likely that future generations will be sitting in their igloos on the Brighton Glacier chewing walrus-blubber and cursing our present-day governments, saying: “If those ignorant lying moneygrabbers had only listened to the People, the climate would have stayed the same.” (6)

Putting it seriously, the political interference in carbon emissions is not helping the world at all – it is interfering with nature and throwing the world into unforeseen consequences due to self-serving political knee-jerk reactions and short-sighted ignorance of the greater cosmic picture, as the unexpected behaviour of the Sun at this moment is demonstrating.

  1. £25 grand a year to allow a wind turbine on your land, guaranteed for ten years and increases in line with inflation. Not bad if you can take a dozen.

  2. Clearly the bottom has dropped out of the once billion dollar carbon credit trading market – not one of Al Gore’s better investments I suspect. One inconvenient truth too far I fear for the “global warming” hype prophets who once stood to make billions in profits from pushing alarmist pseudo science.

  3. Wind turbines and all those associated devices are touted as replacements for carbon driven energy but this is a mistake as they are simply ways of reducing the need for carbon driven energy. They could reduce the bill for oil and gas imports by a certain amount and that would save the nation billions in our already super fantastic balance of payments deficit. As they say every little helps and billions of currency units are not to be sneered at.

But at the end of the day everyone relies on carbon-based electricity and will do until forever unless the world comes to an end or scientists devise a reliable form of endless fusion power. This will not be achieved in the UK as research and development in these fields has been cut to bone by the Lib-Dem Junta thus guaranteeing our nation’s descent into Third World status no matter what happens.

Of course we still have lots of coal and one imagines that at some point HM government is going to have to seriously consider reopening our biggest coalfield, the East Midlands field, to produce electricity for a nation on the edge of blackout and, don’t laugh, revolution.

The idea of the flaccid, apathetic Brits going ape is hardly credible; but it could happen if people are denied their creature comforts.

I do not see why using this coal field with its straight even seams of coal could not be mined by machinery, and with coal-fired generating plants and all the latest high environmental equipment, that would at least keep the lights on without poisoning the atmosphere of our neighbours like the Netherlands and Denmark.

Not only that but the high-tech spin-off and supply chain would create a new industrial zone in the Sheffield, Nottingham and Leicester area.

Even using this field at full power it would still last for a long time and we could still keep some wind turbines to back up electrical generation during clement weather.

  4. An excellent well researched article from my friend Peter Mills. We can but hope the truth regarding the fallacy that man is causing climate change will out. I have written to the BBC demanding that as a public service David Bellamy should be allowed to present his facts regarding this subject. So far, on our publically funded BBC only those towing the leftist/liberal pro climate change con game are allowed a voice. We all own the BBC and must demand that the true facts are heard.

There are those in Parliament and the House of Lords who have considerable investments in the wind machine industry. These people have a vested interest in promoting misinformation and lies concerning global warning and should be named and shamed. The Lib/Dems take note.

In Somerset there is considerable opposition against wind machines which has been effective. We must keep the pressure on and expose this confidence trick for what it is. Congratulations to the BDP for being in the forefront of this campaign.

  5. Excellent article from Peter Mills. Isn’t it strange how we never hear the global warming/climate change enthusiasts mention the effect that the sun’s activity is having on Earth’s climate.

It seems that there are scientists who have done extensive research on the correlation between the Earth’s climate historically and what we know about the sun’s activity from what few past records we have.

The unfortunate fact is that we humans just haven’t been around for that long in relation to the Earth’s history, so we really don’t know how to predict exactly what will happen over a longer timespan.

It does seem that we are overdue for an ice age though, according to past records showing their frequency. It may well be that we are gradually heading into one, initiated by the sun’s inactivity, and we would be better making plans as to how we as a civilisation intend to handle the intense cold. The present incumbents of Westminster are not interested in any of this though, as it is much more profitable for them to continue with the man made, carbon related global warming lie.

  6. Any politician spouting ‘climate change global warming’ is of course trying to claim some moral high ground like those eco warriors that tear trees to ribbons .

Until I hear a politician pointing at the real problem – population growth – and stopping sending aid and helping the Third World to prosper whilst us heavily taxed cannot afford to breed – then they can all go to hell.

Footing the bill for our own extinction is just a step too far.
