German Magazine Accuses US of Spying on EU

It can hardly be disputed that America’s global reputation has been (deservedly) in decline for many years now – indeed a growing number of people consider the ailing superpower to be the greatest threat to world peace bar none.

Britain, not surprisingly, is similarly tainted through association, courtesy of what is laughingly known as the “special relationship” – one akin to that between a dog and its master.

Certainly both countries are run by corrupt regimes subservient to corporate and other vested interest groups, as the mutually beneficial links between politicians, banksters, executives, regulators and auditors here in Britain illustrate.

The news then that a leading German magazine has accused the US (supposedly our ally) of spying on the EU will not come as a shock – particularly so in the light of the revelations concerning the activities of both US and British intelligence agencies in spying on the general public on both sides of “the pond”.

In response to the magazine’s claims, the head of the European Parliament has demanded “full clarification” from the US – specifically in respect of the allegation that that key EU premises in America have been bugged. Adding that if the allegation was true then it would have a “severe impact” on ties between the EU and the US.

The Der Spiegel magazine article cites a secret 2010 document alleging that the US spied on EU offices in New York and Washington, this originating from fugitive ex-CIA analyst Edward Snowden – a “whistleblower” whom the US is desperate to silence.

According to the document, which was allegedly compiled by the NSA, the US spied on EU internal computer networks in Washington and at the EU’s UN office in New York.

Interestingly the document also allegedly refers to the EU as a “target” as though it were a terrorist group or hostile power.

It is not known what information US spies might have got, but details of European positions relating to trade and military matters would have been useful to those involved in negotiations between Washington and European governments – as has similar US spying activities in respect of China and Russia.

The German magazine also quotes Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister as saying: “If these reports are true, it’s disgusting, the United States would be better off monitoring its secret services rather than its allies.”

Many nationalists believe that Britain needs to re-evaluate its general relationship with the US, its continuing role (if any) within the US dominated warmongering NATO structure and the wisdom of allowing the US military bases on British soil.

In other words Britain should cease being a US poodle state and adopt either a policy of neutrality or, preferably, build alliances beneficial to European survival as opposed to global corporatism.

  1. The US is becoming a pariah state – is there no end to its bullyboy behaviour?
