Cameron Reneges On Sovereignty Bill

vote leaveFollowing the ‘Queen’s Speech’ on Wednesday 18th May it became clear that David Cameron had abandoned plans to make Parliament supreme over European courts as ministers admitted the proposals were not workable while Britain remained in the EU.

Eurosceptics were left furious by the absence of a Sovereignty Bill, which Mr Cameron had promised following the completion of his renegotiation with Brussels in February.

On Wednesday night, Downing Street announced it would still put forward a Sovereignty Bill if Britain votes to stay in the EU.

This is a contradiction in terms and certainly something the government will not be able to deliver should Britain vote to remain in the EU.

Mr Duncan Smith said: “Many Conservatives have become increasingly concerned that in the Governments helter skelter pursuit of the Referendum, they have been jettisoning or watering down key elements of their legislative programme.”

He added: “Now it appears the much vaunted Sovereignty bill, key to the argument that the PM had secured a reform of the EU, has been tossed aside as well. The fear in Government must be that as no one in Britain buys the idea that the EU has been reformed, the Sovereignty bill would draw the public’s attention back to that failure”.

“After all if the EU Court of justice is supreme and can strike down our laws, the British people would have just laughed at the idea Britain can be sovereign unless we leave the EU.”

Don’t laugh, help David Cameron deliver on his sovereignty bill by voting to leave the EU.
